CURRICULUM
At Phoenix Academy, the core curriculum is centred around the social, emotional and mental health needs of our pupils. We are unapologetic that this core takes precedence over all else because by addressing their EHCP needs first it then enables pupils to access the core academic curriculum of maths and English and also the wider academic curriculum.
Our academic programmes of study are based on the National curriculum. English, mathematics and science cover the full range of aims and attainment targets.
For the wider curriculum subjects, the programmes of study have been refined so that pupils leave with a secure knowledge of identified core knowledge, skills and understanding.
As a school we want to ensure that the new curriculum is exciting, enjoyable and challenging. Therefore, we have introduced a new Thematic Curriculum with a new topic being introduced each half term. Using a thematic approach will support this vision while still being skill based and knowledge supported.
During the half term most of the lessons that will be taught are taught through the chosen theme. For those lessons, where staff feel that the quality of teaching and learning would be compromised, identified lessons will be taught discreetly.
