Phoenix academy offer an extended day provision on a Thursday. Staff provide a range of workshop style activities. Normal lessons conclude at 2.30 and pupils make their way up to the dining room where they are picked up by their particular workshop leaders. These workshops may vary from one half term to the next but pupils are encouraged to try different ones so that they get to experience a range of activities. They don’t operate on either the first or last weekend of each half term.
The day ends at 3.15. Some of the workshops that are on offer may be;
Phoenix Academy have their own Forest School location. This provides pupils with an opportunity to explore and learn from the out-door environment; this includes learning about safe risk taking, nature and working together as part of a team amongst other things.
A popular choice with many pupils where they learn to accept following rules, sportsmanship and new physical skills.. It give our pupils a chance to gain confidence in a non-classroom environment, working together to achieve the goals.
Many pupils who may struggle with the more academic subjects find that they excel in creative activities. Pupils learn to use different materials and tools to express their ideas.
Other than the limited use of computers for gaming, pupils here learn how to create using ICT eg. learning how to make simple animations, download and enhance digital photography as well as using ICT to produce art.
Cooking is always well subscribed to, not least of which because they get to take home and eat what they make! Part of this workshop is to teach children the importance of eating a healthy diet and about the need for basic hygiene when handling food.
Music provide pupils with an opportunity to learn the basics of playing a musical instrument, there are also times when they get to exercise their vocal chords with Karaoke or choir singing.
